Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Grand Theft Auto is a game best played with a nice hip-hop soundtrack behind you, and in some cases, to give it one more mafia-like taste, a set of classical music also go well. I listen to Fabolous ‘new’ Loso’s Way “and it is super hot production, flow, and beats fit pretty well with the quality you would find in Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars. You might think to yourself, ‘what is a Nintendo DS games doing on PSP? “Well, firstly, it gives PSP owners a brand new Gta game, it’s a start. And to switch things up, instead of going for a visual overhaul, Rockstar kept the traditional angle of the game, and it works very well.

If you are a true fan of GTA series, so you should have played the original PC game, back when they used a top-down perspective, and much more simplified visuals. That the traditional style are long gone thanks to the advent of more powerful consoles, but the camera angle has always found its way into newer GTAs as a sort of little nostalgic bonus. But here we have China Town Wars, the camera angle is not quite the same top-down perspective previous games, but rather it has a bit of an isometric tilt it to help you look ahead, and it is rotatable.
Besides camera angles, fans of modern GTAs find little to complain about here. The story is really fantastic, probably the best since Grand Theft Auto III. It is a very personal tale driven by all the elements that made GTA stories so solid, but with a bit more emphasis on personal feelings, so you feel connected to your main character Huang Lee, more so than other GTA characters from the past . Huang is the son of a huge Asian mob boss who was murdered. Huang got an heirloom sword that his father won during a poker game, and after his arrival in Liberty City, Huang is attacked, his companions murdered and Huang left for dead in a sinking car.
The sword is gone, but Huang makes it out alive out of water. You go to meet with your uncle Kenny, and from there the adventure begins … and drama are rising rapidly, I must say. As is usual, through the many contacts that you create in the game, they will provide you with your missions, rewards, and so on. You have many places to live in, as I’m sure you knew. Your menu is designed much like the PlayStation 3 and PSP’s XMB (Cross Media Bar), and here you can manage your communication (email, contacts), see Business reports (ammu-Nation Trading Info), See Personal info (Game Stats, Music ), see Out & About features (GPS / routing, panty / goals), set up Multiplayer sessions, and view various System Preferences.
As far as gameplay, play China Town Wars fantastically well. You’ve got guns, you’ve got the funny, you’ve got the cars, and you’ve got missions that are unusually fun than console games. Do not ask me why or how they’re fun, they simply feel that way to me. Maybe it’s the portable nature and the more traditional gameplay, or maybe it’s the simplicity of it all, which I really dig. There are also car theft feature which is activated when you try to steal a parked car. For example, a car requires that you use the analog stick to hot-wire the car, another car may require you to jam a screwdriver in the ignition and turn it with the analog stick, and a second car will have pin code protection activated, which will require you to use your in-game PDA to find the code – it’s a nice little feature. China Town Wars proves that you can be simplified and still feel like a proper console game would, because honestly, I would have loved to play this with even better HD graphics on PS3 – it would be divine.
And on that note, is the visual really, really nice. You might think ‘but it is a DS port’, yes, it does not matter. Sony dislike direct ports, so of course you must expect the visuals here to be redone for the PSP and they are amazingly sharp. When you’re in the game world, especially when it is light outside, take a look at the buildings and textures that make them, you’ll find the organic look, with the same. The colors and light make the textures stand out more, giving this game a very fine blend of aesthetics that blend the true colors of New York / Liberty City with the look of GTA. I also quite like how the cars react to crashes, and the damage is decent for. Just because China Town Wars looks simple, does not mean it is a classic example of judging, books and their covers. Also for those wondering, are the cut-scenes artistic stills, instead of in-game. And the framerate is quite stable.
Due to time constraints, there is no voice acting here in China Town Wars, unlike other GTA games. The game measures somewhere around 500MB mark, leaving nearly a second gig of space for the voices, but it would slow down China Town Wars considerably and makes porting the game very expensive for Rockstar. For now though, I did not mind reading the lines in cut-scenes. That said, the ambient sounds of Liberty City continues to deliver the feeling of a living city, as China Town Wars sounds pretty good, especially with a pair of headphones. The PSP version also contains a much larger soundtrack, but do not expect big licenses here, it’s lower key more underground stuff. But regardless, this game got a solid soundtrack, too.
Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars is a solid game with a wealth of things to do. It is a very well featured GTA game to give GTA fans continuous enjoyment for hours. The story is really good with tons of twists that you would expect from a GTA game, and the gameplay is there to make everything feel super polished and practical full scale. The visuals are nice, clean and very sharp, and I highly doubt anyone would complain about them. I sincerely hope that Rockstar decides to do a HD release of this for the PS3, downloadable games, it would certainly be a treat. But it is a fantastic handheld game, a definite must own.
