Selling Crafts online
I have always been fascinated with footfall.
Off the beaten track in towns and shopping centres you will see shops trying to survive with just a trickle of traffic or footfall.
In the world of bricks and mortar footfall is very important.
The used words ‘location, location, location’ may be an over simplification of a shops survival in the real world but in the virtual world it is the most important.
In the virtual world the three most important things are Location, Stall Front, and is it a business.
In the internet world of business let’s look at location.
If you have no traffic (virtual footfall) then you have no sales then you have no business.
When looking at footfall lets understand that nearly all your visitors and potential customers will visit you via the search engines. About 90% will come to your craft stall this way.
So what if you’re trying to sell something and it has no rank with the search engines. Then you will never be able to sell it or if you do the chances are based on luck alone.
Luck isn’t a good way to run a business.
Rank is everything in the engine searches.
High ranking products get more visitors and more potential sales.
If getting a good location in the bricks and mortar world is important to the success of your business then getting a high ranking position to sell your crafts is essential in the web world.
The notion that having a website will bring you customers is pure nonsense. I repeat pure nonsense. You can have the most beautiful website on the web but if it isn’t ranked with the search engines it will be as useless as an ashtray on a motorbike.
So before you ever think about selling online you first think about the position your craft shop or craft stall will be on the search engines.
I am a true believer that individual websites as a means of craft sales are a waste of time, effort and money.
Yes there are successes but on the whole the effort for any organisation to sell successfully online as an individual or company is enormous compared with selling on dedicated ecommerce sites.
If you are determined to set up a website and sell online then ask the web designer about how the site can be positioned at the top of the search engines.
The answers are usually.
- You need to talk with an SEO (search engine optimization) expert.
- It takes months and money to get up the rankings
- Be patient it will happen
- Get the right keywords etc. etc etc.
Don’t be fooled by such nonsense, getting a website up the search engines ranking is seriously difficult and demands a lot of time and effort.
And even with all that time and effort it may still not be on the first 5 pages of search engines.
Most people never look beyond page 2.
So the bottom line is that if you if you want to sell your crafts online join a craft ecommerce site that has the traffic there already.
That’s a no brainer but the right choice of ecommerce site will further optimise your sales.
So if you are serious about selling online and if you don’t want to spend fortunes on advertising then relook and rethink your strategy.
The stall Front or Shop front will be discussed in our next blog.
Till then
Bye from the Craftgo team.
